Nick formed the company that would become Rainbow Theatre in 1983, and created Rainbow Shakespeare with his partner, now his wife, Alex Croft, nine years ago, to bring Shakespeare alive for family audiences.

His first production at the precocious age of 12 was Hamlet in the family attic. Since then Shakespeare has always been his first love. His student company, The Rafter Players, toured throughout Scandinavia and Russia with their acclaimed productions of the Bard. He directed Burton and Taylor whilst at Oxford, in the stage and film productions of Doctor Faustus. He then went on to train as a director with the RSC, working with actors such as Michael Williams, Alan Howard and Helen Mirren.

He became Director of the Ludlow Shakespeare Festival before coming as Artistic Director to Worthing’s Connaught Theatre, where he stayed for 10 years, directing every sort of drama, including a new musical that transferred to London’s Shaftesbury. His passion remained in the annual Shakespeare production.

In 1983 he then formed the company that was to become Rainbow – playing to thousands of schoolchildren and students each year. He also is a guest director for various amateur operatic companies in the South of England. His play, Ciphers, on Francis Bacon, was performed last year by the Wick Theatre Company.
